Course Overview
This course follows from COMP 2766 and is designed for students who already have a solid foundation in command-line Linux. Through hands-on exercises and labs, students will monitor the system, automate common administrative tasks, secure and maintain the entire system. Topics include archiving and transferring files between systems, web server administration, scheduling, logging, and basic troubleshooting for Linux Administrators. Participants will configure a web server, schedule future tasks, write Bash shell scripts, configure a server firewall, log kernel messages, archive and transfer files. COMP 2766 and COMP 2768 are electives in the CST FLEX Diploma and together are equivalent to ACIT 2420 in the CIT Diploma. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be aware of best practices in Linux Administration. Note: COMP 2768 has replaced COMP 2767 and is offered in the summer term directly after COMP 2766.

- This course is 12 hours and is delivered entirely online asynchronously. There are no scheduled class lecture or lab times. Students will have access to a real time virtual Q&A session on MS Teams for 1 hour each week. Monday, July 21 @ 7pm Monday, July 28 @ 7pm Monday, August 4 @ 7pm Please Note: Participation in the BCIT Learning Hub is mandatory. Depending on the student, this course may require an average total time commitment of 12-16+ hours per week. Late registration is not permitted. BCIT Computing is primarily a Microsoft Windows environment. Students must provide their own current model Windows-compatible PC. i5 or higher equivalent processor, with 8 GB of RAM minimum, and 256 GB minimum storage. Highspeed internet access is needed. Mac users must have the ability to manage and support their iOS computer. They may need to create a virtual Windows environment using Parallels or VMWare Fusion. COMP instructors may not be able to assist Mac users with software compatibility issues. BCIT does not provide access to Parallels or support for students to use a Mac to run Windows.
