Course details

Covers methods used to determine the quality of manufactured components. Topics include quality concepts, inspection planning, measurement error, repeatability and reproducibility studies, computer-aided inspection technology, coordinate metrology systems, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze a given product and customer requirements and derive a framework for detailed characteristics and specifications.
  • Apply a step-by-step procedure for planning for quality.
  • Plan inspection in terms of characteristics, amount of inspection, methods, personnel, locations, decisions, errors and documentation.
  • Review control plan examples from industry and understand the information contained in them.
  • Understand the basic purpose and procedures for a gage variation study.
  • Perform calculations for gage repeatability and reproducibility.
  • Explain gage analysis concepts including repeatability, reproducibility, stability, capability, accuracy, deflection, shifts, drifts, and intervals.
  • Explain the forces driving the development of advanced technology in the quality industry and the challenges that are present.
  • List the categories of quality costs and classify company activities into those categories.
  • List various dimensioning and tolerancing approaches and their advantages and disadvantages
  • Describe the main advantages of the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) system over coordinate tolerancing.
  • Decode symbols used in drawings following the ASME Y14.5-1994 dimensioning and tolerancing standard
  • Perform calculations using basic GD&T concepts including Rule #1, material condition, bonus tolerance, virtual condition, position tolerancing, and conversion of coordinate values.
  • Explain the impact of GD&T implementation on inspection in terms of terminology and symbology, personnel requirements, equipment and methods, and communication requirements.
