Course Overview
The COMM 0045 course provides students with guided opportunities to practice and improve English language skills that they need for success in first term COMM courses and in the workplace. The course will focus on writing and reading skills, and students will study key language points they need to master in order to produce standard, idiomatic English sentences and paragraphs.
Prerequisite(s)
- Current registration in a BCIT full-time program, or a grade of "U" (unsatisfactory) in COMM 0015 with approval of the Communication Department, or a grade of 65% or higher in COMM 0005 in March 2005 or earlier; if you completed COMM 0005 in April 2005 or after, a grade of 50% or higher. NOTE: The COMM 0015 test will be administered at the end of this course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Paraphrase correctly.
- Write clear and concise sentences.
- Identify and use sentence patterns appropriately.
- Listen for main ideas and details and take notes.
- Be able to communicate effectively in oral activities.
- Practice subordination using participial and absolute phrases.
- Summarize information and express themselves concisely in English.
- Practice using correct punctuation and capitalization.
- Apply note-taking techniques to reading and listening materials.
