Course Overview
This course provides a foundation in simple circuits comprised of basic passive and active electrical components. The concepts developed in this course prepares students for the Industrial Systems and Safety for Industrial Network Cybersecurity, Engineering Fundamentals for Industrial Network Cybersecurity, and Programmable Logic Controllers course in term two. Topics include: Ohm’s Law, basic circuit analysis, passive components (resistors, capacitors, and inductors), active components (diodes, transistors, etc.), electrical devices (switches, sensors, etc.), and wiring diagrams. Simple circuits using active and passive components will be built and tested using a multimeter. Corequisite: MATH 1431*, Technical Mathematics for Electronics (* (*may be taken concurrently)

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the characteristics of passive electrical components (resistors, capacitors, and inductors) and their behavior in simple circuits. (2)
- Describe the characteristics and principle of operation of common active electrical components (diodes, LEDs, transistors and photo-sensors) and their behavior in simple circuits. (2)
- Apply Ohm’s law and Kirchhoff’s voltage and current laws to simple circuits. (3)
- Build simple series-parallel passive networks. (3)
- Troubleshoot simple series-parallel passive networks using a multimeter to measure voltage, current and resistance. (3)
- Predict the operation of common, basic industrial interface circuits. (4)
- Interface common electrical devices (switches, sensors, drivers, voltage-to-current converter, etc.) given a wiring diagram. (3)
- Troubleshoot common electrical devices (switches, sensors, drivers, voltage-to-current converter, etc.) given a wiring diagram. (3)
