Course Overview
Students will learn to modify the routine echocardiogram by integrating patient history, correlating test results, and clinical presentation to perform targeted echocardiography studies. Students will build on the imaging and technical skills learned in DSON 2012 and employ critical thinking skills to adapt examinations to answer specific clinical indications. Topics of this course include 2D, CDI, and spectral Doppler assessment and quantification of the heart structure and function using the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines. Students will perform echo sonography hands-on skills on a lab partner with instructor guidance.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Verify written directions and assess and record accurate medical history and health status. (1.2a, 1.2b, 5.1b)
- Verify the requested procedure correlates with the patient's clinical history and presentation, and address concerns as appropriate. (2.2b)
- Use appropriate body language and communicate with the patient throughout the examination, in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand, and adapt communication as necessary. (1.3a, 1.1d, 1.1b)
- Perform all required images and measurements of a cardiac ultrasound examination on simple, technically straightforward patients with some problem-solving, minimal guidance, critical thinking and time management.
- Modify the cardiac ultrasound examination based on patient symptoms, acquired clinical history, laboratory results, sonographic findings, and knowledge of disease processes.
- Formulate and communicate an accurate technical impression and differential diagnosis using sonographic descriptors and medical terminology based on patient history and sonographic findings.
- Use various sonographic windows and scanning strategies to assess organs for pathology in a timely manner while recognizing exam limitations. (3.1h)
- Identify and respond to urgent sonographic findings. (2.3h)
