Course Overview
DSON 3003 Cardiac Sonography 3 is a continuation of DSON 2003 Cardiac Sonography 2. This course includes modules on valve replacement and repair, diseases of the great vessels, infective endocarditis and cardiac masses, pericardial disease, heart failure and congenital abnormalities including surgical corrections. The emphasis throughout this course is on the integration of hemodynamics and clinical findings with typical and atypical sonographic features in the setting of cardiac disease. Theory learned in DSON 1003 and 2003 will be integrated throughout this course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the etiology, clinical signs and symptoms, and expected echo findings in patients with various cardiac conditions.
- Describe how to perform sonographic examinations using 3-D imaging. (4.2h)
- Perform intravenous starts. (3.3k)
- Follow standardized procedures for handling and disposing of sharps, and contaminated and biohazardous materials. (6.2d)
- Through case studies, record examination procedures and diagnostic data on a technical report in a timely, accurate and concise matter. (1.2c, 1.2d, 5.4a, 5.4g)
- Describe the embryological development of heart structures.
- Given an ultrasound image, assess for cardiac and abdominal situs. (Appendix E)
- Describe the expected sonographic appearance and possible complications of both simple and complex congenital heart disease.
- Describe the various surgical corrections for congenital heart disease and the expected sonographic appearance in an adult post-surgical correction.
- Describe the assessment technique for the following structures with 2D, colour, CW and PW Doppler, and measure (when applicable): abdominal situs, cardiac position, chest and thorax, coronary vessels, hepatic veins, outflow tracts, pulmonary veins, wall layers and segments, all 4 cardiac chambers and appendages, IAS, IVS, great vessels and their branches, all cardiac valves.
