Course Overview
This course provides practical, applied training in airtightness for sub-trades working on Part 9 residential buildings. Participants will develop a foundational understanding of airtightness, air leakage, and air barrier systems, with a focus on maintaining continuity at common transitions, openings, and service penetrations. Through technical instruction and hands-on practice, participants will learn to identify common leakage risks and installation deficiencies, complete typical airtightness details and repairs, and assess their work using qualitative testing methods. The course also emphasizes how workmanship, sequencing, and coordination between trades affect overall airtightness performance.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain why airtightness matters in Part 9 residential construction, including its effects on moisture management, durability, energy use, comfort and occupant health.
- Distinguish between the functions of an air barrier and a vapor barrier.
- Identify common forces that drive air leakage, including wind, stack effect and mechanical pressure.
- Describe common interior and exterior air barrier approaches and identify factors that affect their continuity and performance.
- Install air barrier membranes, transitions, and penetration seals in accordance with good practice and manufacturer requirements.
- Identify common site deficiencies and explain how they can contribute to air leakage and blower door test failure.
- Participate effectively in mock-up installation, qualitative testing using smoke or infrared tools, and preparation for quantitative airtightness testing.
- Explain how workmanship, sequencing and coordination between trades affect final air leakage rates and overall building performance.
