Course Overview
This advanced course will build upon the concepts explored in course NSPN 7741 – Introduction to Sexual Health Rehabilitation. The course examines, from an intersectional perspective, the impact of biases and stigma as they relate to concepts of sexuality and sexual well-being in society. The course integrates the sexual rehabilitation principles, frameworks and communication strategies in the context of complex patient scenarios. The selection and application of evidence-informed physical, psychological and practical sexual rehabilitation interventions is explored. The course examines the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to conduct a sexual interview, interpret findings and respond effectively to patient scenarios.

- Explore the impacts of biases and stigma as they relate to sexuality
- Distinguish between different forms of stigma, including self, social, and structural
- Examine the impact of stigma and discrimination on sexual health
- Demonstrate how philosophical underpinnings can maintain barriers to sexual health and well-being
- Examine the relationship between own personal biases, implicit and explicit values, and assumptions relating to sexual health and clinical practice
- Implement evidence-informed approaches to challenge existing barriers to sexual health
- Integrate a variety of sexual health rehabilitation principles and frameworks to complex patient scenarios
- Utilize the 3-step method to initiate a discussion with a patient about sexual health in a variety of settings
- Conduct a comprehensive sexual health assessment or dialogue using recognized communication strategies and frameworks
- Examine a patient's identified sexual health concerns, causes of sexual distress, and contributing factors
- Incorporate the IMB model when co-creating a plan for sexual health rehabilitation (SIECCAN, 2019)
- Apply evidence-informed physical, psychological, and practical sexual health rehabilitation interventions
- Incorporate a Motivational Interviewing approach into the development of an individualized sexual health rehabilitation care plan (CCMI, 2023)
- Organize a patient's sexual health rehabilitation care plan that values their priorities and context
- Assemble helpful local, territorial, provincial, national, and international resources in sexual health care
- Articulate profession's scope as it relates to sexual health care
