Course Overview
This course applies knowledge, skills and judgement learned in HSIP 1000 – Interprofessional Patient Care to the medical imaging environment. Students will learn the clinical applications and procedural requirements for specialized skills required of medical radiation technologists. Area of focus includes sterile procedures, specific isolation precautions, operating room procedures and equipment operations. Students will also learn about fluoroscopic procedures and the patient care and communication strategies that are required of technologists in the clinical environment. This course is delivered in a lab setting with clinically relevant activities and simulations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Given a scenario, demonstrate appropriate patient communication skills.
- Given a scenario, perform proper isolation procedures.
- Perform sterile techniques applicable to a variety of clinical scenarios.
- Explain the technologist's role in the operating room.
- Describe the method of performing imaging studies in the operating room.
- Explain the technologist's role in patient care in the operating room.
- Given a variety of clinically relevant scenarios, demonstrate the safe use of imaging equipment.
- Describe common fluoroscopic examinations.
- Explain the technologist's role in fluoroscopic examinations in a patient-centered approach.
- Demonstrate proper insertion of rectal tubes for barium enema procedures.
- Demonstrate proper removal of urinary catheters for urinary procedures.
- Describe common pharmaceutical agents common to medical imaging.
- Given a scenario, describe the appropriate communications style during transfer of care.
- Describe contrast media agents common to medical imaging and their effects.
