Course details

This course supplements a person's practical qualifying experience (as described in the British Columbia Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Regulation), by providing the theoretical training. Upon successful completion of this course, plus the requisite qualifying experience, participants will have sufficient skills and knowledge to fulfill the requirements of the Fifth Class Power Engineer's Certificate examinations administered under the BC Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Fulfill the Interprovincial examination requirements in the subjects of applied science; the BC Act & Regulations; Codes; basic design of heating boilers; boiler fittings; fuels and combustion; boiler controls; boiler operation and maintenance; feedwater treatment; pumps, valves and piping; environmental comfort, heating systems; electricity; plumbing; safety; air compression; basic design of power boilers.
  • Describe the construction, safe operation and minor repairs of commercial building and light industrial heating plant equipment within the scope of a 5th Class.
