Course Overview
This course establishes the foundational knowledge required for participants to engage confidently in the Applied Mass Timber Engineering Microcredential. Through a progression from core terminology and product families to historical and regulatory context, to the technical properties of wood, participants develop a shared vocabulary and broad understanding of how mass timber performs, how it is procured and assembled, and how it fits within modern industrialized construction workflows. Participants also gain a clear understanding of MT's value proposition, typical project delivery workflows, and the code and regulatory framework governing mass timber construction in Canada primarily, and the United States. The course is delivered online with live sessions and prepares participants to enter the advanced engineering design courses that follow.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define and classify mass timber products, systems, and terminology, and apply this shared vocabulary in cross-disciplinary professional contexts.
- Summarize the historical development of mass timber and interpret the current code and regulatory framework governing MT construction in Canada and the United States.
- Evaluate the benefits and challenges of mass timber as a structural material, including performance, environmental, and project delivery considerations.
- Describe how mass timber integrates into industrialized and offsite construction workflows, from digital design through fabrication, logistics, and site assembly.
- Analyze the fundamental technical properties of wood relevant to structural engineering, including mechanical behavior, fire resistance, moisture response, acoustic performance, and thermal characteristics.
Effective as of Fall 2026
