Course Overview
This introductory course covers the fundamental concepts and principles of surveying: introduction to surveying; types of surveys; safety; significant figures and rounding of numbers; linear and angular measurements and units of measurements; accuracy, precision and errors. The course will include an introduction to survey leveling, including: basic leveling terms; curvature and refraction; types of leveling; levels and miscellaneous survey equipment; setting up levels; reading level rods; introduction to differential leveling including adjustments and orders of vertical control; peg test; and associated field notes. Applications of vertical and horizontal angle measurements; distance measurement and reduction; coordinate geometry; traverse measurements, computations and adjustments; areas, cross-sections, cut & fill; volumes; and introduction to total stations. SURV 1185 is a prerequisite for: SURV 1195 - Surveying for Mining 1 & 2 Field.
