Course Overview
The purpose of this course is to provide students with foundation skills and knowledge to enhance job readiness with employers at an entry level job. Lubrication and the maintenance of seals and bearings is an important and critical part of maintenance. Students will obtain sufficient skill and knowledge in this area to work competently in an entry level job placement. The skills acquired in this course are beyond those of Level One Apprentice but are necessary for the foundation student to meet basic job ready requirements.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe types of friction
- Describe the properties and characteristics of lubricants and lubrication systems
- Select the correct lubricant for specific applications
- Describe the safe use, storage and handling of lubricants
- Maintain lubrication systems
- Perform lubrication tasks encountered by a millwright
- Describe classes of sealing
- Describe gaskets, packing and mechanical seals
- Identify contact and non-contact seals
- Select seals, gaskets and packing
- Describe types and uses of frictions and anti-friction bearings and bearing materials
- Select bearings from manufacturer's catalogues for selected applications
- Install friction and anti-friction bearings
- Remove friction and anti-friction bearings
- Perform inspection and maintenance procedures on friction and anti-friction bearings
- Identify various types of conveyor systems and their components
- Describe couplings and service requirements
- Describe gear drives and reduction units and service requirements
