Writing Skills

When you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to:

• Identify your reader and purpose before you write.
• Organize ideas using pre-writing techniques.
• Use a standard format for letters and memos.
• Write subject lines for your letters, memos, and emails.
• Write routine letters and memos.
• Write in a technical style.
• Use headings and lists in your documents.
• Write sentences that are clear, concise, and grammatically correct.
• Write effective, well-organized effective paragraphs.
• Identify and correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
• Use MS-WORD to write, edit, and revise documents.
• Prepare a list of questions for instructors and Program Head of your future program for Tech Day.
• Use your communication skills to complete projects assigned in all your Technology Entry courses.

Speaking Skills

When you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to:

• Participate effectively and confidently in small group discussions and group meetings
• Effectively obtain information from students, instructors, and Program Head on your future program during Tech Day activities.
• Exhibit appropriate language choices, including register (level of formality) and tone for academic and workplace situations.
• Summarize and paraphrase ideas from texts or handouts to the class.
• Plan, organize, and deliver an effective oral report on a technology-related topic.
• Express ideas and opinions clearly, coherently, and logically using Standard English and avoiding idioms.
• Ask for feedback and give effective oral feedback.

Reading and Study Skills

When you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to:

• Effectively use BCIT library facilities for research.
• Use strategies to manage time effectively.
• Effectively review your notes, handouts, and texts to prepare for exams.
• Follow written instructions for classroom activities, assignments, and exams.
• Research Internet and other sources to prepare oral report.
• Use your reading and study skills in your BCIT courses.
• Give tactful written feedback on group oral reports.

Listening Skills:

When you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to:

• Follow oral instructions for classroom activities and assignments.
• Listen to oral reports of your classmates in order to obtain information, ask questions, and provide written feedback.
• Listen to lectures in order to take effective notes.
