Course Overview
This course is a survey of the business of biotechnology. This will include the basic biological principles necessary to understand the science of the technologies that make up the biotechnology tool box. Technology Topics include: fermentation, genetic engineering, monoclonal antibodies, cell culture, bioinformatics and enzyme technology. The course will explore the role of Biotechnology in advancements of products and services in health care, agriculture, environment, and marine. The ethical implications of these technologies will also be discussed.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Define biotechnology.
- Describe the Global, Canadian and Local biotechnology clusters with respect to market size and focus.
- Understand biotechnology products that are produced in Canada, as well as their target market.
- List and briefly explain the component technologies that make up the Biotechnology toolbox.
- Describe the role of biotechnology in agriculture, forestry, human health, food, aquaculture, and environment.
