Course Overview
This comprehensive clinical practicum in electrophysiology technology and cardiac rhythm device implantation is conducted at an approved center with an electrophysiology lab. Students will spend a minimum of 800 hours (23 weeks) at the clinical site, first observing and subsequently learning and refining their skills in patient assessment, performance of EP diagnostic studies, understanding catheter ablation and cardiac device implantation. Students will log their experiences recording a variety of EP diagnostic studies and observing cardiac rhythm device implants. Specific goals of consistency in competency requirements must be met before the student completes the practicum. More generic skills such as computer skills, teamwork, communication, problem solving and patient care are woven throughout the course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
EP procedures:
- Successfully interpret at least 80 intra-cardiac electrophysiology studies.
- Perform at least 80 diagnostic EP cases (of the 80 cases, 20 are observed, 40 are assisted and 20 are performed independently).
- Perform at least 80 interventional EP cases (of the 80 cases, 20 are observed, 40 are assisted and 20 are performed independently).
- Prepare and maintain the sterile table for 25 EP cases (of the 25 cases, 5 are observed, 10 are assisted and 10 are performed independently).
- Perform at least 15 lead analyses and monitoring during pacemaker/ICD implant (of the 15 cases, 5 are observed, 5 are assisted and 5 are performed independently).
- Maintain a log book in which the type of each patient seen is recorded.
General EP clinical skills:
- Recognize abnormalities and correlate information obtained from the EP study with other clinical data.
- Take a patient history.
- Document care delivery.
- Apply the principles of electrophysiology during the assessment.
- Perform physical assessment of the patient.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records.
- Maintain sterility, asepsis and infection control.
- Ensure safety and care of electrical equipment and connections to patients.
- Perform administration of oxygen and precautions for oxygen use.
- Recognize the effects of cardiac drugs on the patient and the ECG (required).
- Exercise independent judgment, problem-solving skills, application of knowledge of clinical electrophysiology.
