For a Career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Diagnostic Medical Sonography, commonly known as ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the developing fetus, heart, abdomen, pelvis, and blood vessels. These examination are separated into 2 main areas:
  1. Cardiac: focuses on the heart and is typically performed in either cardiology or diagnostic imaging departments of hospitals.
  2. General: includes fetal, abdominal, pelvic, vascular (blood vessels) and superficial structures and is typically performed in hospital diagnostic imaging departments or outpatient imaging clinics.
Each patient comes with unique needs and, as a student, you will learn diagnostic problem-solving and team collaboration skills to give each patient the highest quality of care.

BCIT’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program offers three options for specialized study. Choose from cardiac sonography, general sonography, or complete a joint cardiac and general diploma. All students will complete the same courses together during the first year of the program to develop a broad knowledge and skill basis and will then focus on their specific options beginning in the third term.

Our program provides access to state of the art equipment and the latest in ultrasound technology so that you are ready to start your career the moment you graduate.
