Gasfitting has a rich history and an exciting future Gas is the fastest growing field within the piping industry. To meet current and future efficiency and environmental emissions standards, rapidly changing technology is applied directly to the operation and maintenance of gas fired appliances and equipment.

Whether you are just starting out or advancing your career. BCIT offers a number of paths to rewarding employment within the gas industry.

A class “B” Gas Fitter Certificate of Qualification entitles the holder to perform the installation or alteration of gas appliances/systems with an input limitation up to and including 120 kW.

A class “A” Gas Fitter Certificate of Qualification entitles the holder to perform the installation or alteration of any gas system. An applicant for a Class “A” Gas Fitter Certificate of Qualification must have held a class “B” Certificate of Qualification for a minimum of two years.

Summary of Programs and Courses

Gasfitting Apprenticeship

Gas Fitter - Class “B” - Candidates must complete two 180 hour terms of classroom training plus 3600 hours of on-the-job work experience as a Gasfitter apprentice. After completion of the training candidates will write a Provincial Certification Exam. Exam success will result in being awarded the “B” Gas Fitter Certificate of Qualification by Technical Safety BC.

Class “A” Industrial Gas Fitter - Candidates must complete an additional 240 hours of classroom training plus 3600 hours of on-the-job work experience as a Class “B” Gas Fitter. After completion of the training candidates will write a Provincial Certification Exam. Exam success will result in being awarded the “A" Gas Fitter Certificate of Qualification by the Technical Safety BC. A British Columbia Certificate of Apprenticeship will also be awarded.

Part-time Studies

Night School

Class “B” Domestic/Commercial Gas Fitter - 84 hours of class room delivery with multiple offerings per year. Students will prepare to write the Provincial Certifying Exam through classroom theory and practical/hands on lab work. Applicants must hold an industry credential in plumbing, steamfitting, refrigeration or sprinklerfitting.

Class “A” Industrial Gas Fitter - 132 hours of class room delivery offered once per year, starting September. Students will prepare to write the Provincial Certifying Exam through classroom theory, guest lectures, field trips and practical/hands-on lab work. All classroom lectures will be recorded for later review. Applicants must have held a Gas Fitter “B” Certificate of Qualification for two years.

Distance/Online

Class “B” Domestic/Commercial Gas Fitter - 72 hours of online delivery with multiple offerings per year. Students will log in Tuesday and Thursday evenings to attend online lectures. All lectures will be recorded for later review. Upon completion of the theory registrants must attend a 7 day practical training program at the BCIT Burnaby campus prior to writing the Technical Safety BC, C of Q exam. Practical offerings are limited to 16 students. The practical will be offered after the completion of the theory term. Applicants must hold an industry credential in plumbing, steamfitting, refrigeration or sprinklerfitting.

Class “A” Industrial Gas Fitter - 117 hours of online delivery offered starting September. Students will log in Monday and Wednesday evenings to attend the theory portion of the Night School classroom. All classroom lectures will be recorded for later review. Upon completion of the theory registrants must attend a 7 day practical training at the BCIT Burnaby campus prior to writing the Technical Safety BC, C of Q exam. Practical offerings are limited to 8 students, and multiple practical offerings every spring (April, May). Applicants must have held a Gas Fitter “B” Certificate of Qualification for two years.
