Frequently Asked Questions

How can I upgrade my education/skills to meet the entrance requirements?

You can do so through adult education courses offered by your local school board, or you can explore some of BCIT's upgrading options.

I am currently enrolled in a prerequisite course, but have not completed it. Can I still apply?

For an application to Level 1, you are required to submit a final grade or a mid-term grade for all prerequisite courses. For a Direct Entry application, you may submit proof of registration.

If I am waitlisted for level 1 and don't get a seat, will I need to submit a new application for the next term?

Yes. The Admissions department does not roll applications from one term to another term.

I would like to get credit for a few courses in level 1 and level 2. Should I apply for Direct Entry?

Students who are accepted to level 1 of the program may apply for individual course credits for a maximum of two courses in level 1 and two courses in level 2. Students who believe they are eligible for more credit than that should apply via the Direct Entry application process.

I have education from another BCIT program or another school. Can I call or meet with someone in the ECET or BEng Electrical program to find out what courses I will get credit for?

No. You must follow the Direct Entry application process. That is the only way that you will be assessed for transfer credit.

I have completed a technology diploma elsewhere in Canada. How can I get into the BEng program?

It is likely that you will need to complete some courses from the common first year before you will be permitted to compete for a seat in Level 3 BEng. Submit your application as a Direct Entry applicant to level 2 ECET. You will be assessed and contacted with the results, once the Direct Entry application deadline for that intake has passed.

I am a red seal electrician. Will I get credit for any courses?

No. In our program you will be learning different things and using more mathematics and science than you used in your training to become an electrician.

Do you accept international students?

We accept international applications to the diploma program. Students who are aiming for the BEng program will begin in level 1 of the diploma program and then compete for a BEng seat during their first year. Please note that a student who will require a study permit must apply to level 1. They cannot apply as a Direct Entry student, because the dates for Direct Entry acceptance will not be in time for study permit deadlines.
