Wood Products Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course focuses on the processes involved in the production of lumber. It explores each step of the production processes from the perspective of the technology and staff involved, safety measures required, and sustainability strategies implemented. This perspective is applied to the log yard, sawmill, kiln, planer, and shipping yard. The course provides foundational knowledge that is directly applicable to competencies related to operational management of a sawmill plant. Students engage in their learning through online activities across the term, and in-class activities during an onsite week. Students' knowledge is assessed through online discussions, quizzes, and the final exam as well as through practical projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the role and function of the main components of a production line.
  • Explain the main processes involved in the production of lumber.
  • Identify emerging sawmill technology, its impact on the production process and safety.
  • Describe safety measures required in each section of a sawmill plant.
  • Identify best practices applied in the lumber production industry to support sustainability of wood resources.
