Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

Module 17 - Introduction to Bridge Inspection

  • Describe the responsibility (within government), for bridge inspections.
  • Describe the responsibilities of the bridge inspector.
  • Describe the two types of bridge inspections and the frequency for each.
  • Describe the three steps of the inspection process.
  • Describe the safety considerations applicable to bridge inspections.
  • List common inspection tools.

Module 18 - The Inspection Reporting System

  • Describe how the information on the bridge inspection form is used.
  • Explain when field notes are required and describe the information that should be included.
  • Describe what photographs should be taken during a bridge inspection.
  • Complete a Bridge Inspection Form.

Module 19 - Common Bridge Materials

  • List the three most common materials used to construct bridges.
  • Describe the physical and mechanical properties of each material.
  • Describe the types of deterioration associated with each material.
  • Describe the most commonly used protective systems for each material.

Module 20 -- Inspection of Waterways

  • Describe the principal types of steam channels.
  • Define the terms 'Hydraulic Opening' and 'Freeboard.'
  • List common materials or techniques used to stabilize the banks of waterways.
  • Describe the necessary steps to prepare for a waterway inspection.
  • Describe the general procedure for inspecting a waterway.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of waterway components.

Module 21 - Inspection of Substructures

  • Describe the physical characteristics of each common type of substructure.
  • List the ways in which substructure materials deteriorate.
  • Describe the types of movement that can affect a substructure.
  • Describe the general procedure for the inspection of a substructure.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of a substructure.

Module 22 - Inspection of Bearings

  • Describe the characteristics of each common type of bridge bearing.
  • Describe what to look for when inspecting each bearing type.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of bearings in a bridge.

Module 23 - Inspection of Timber Superstructures

  • Describe the various types of beam/stringer timber superstructures.
  • Explain the differences between timber though trusses, pony trusses and deck trusses.
  • Describe the main components of a timber truss.
  • Describe what to look for when inspecting timber beam/stringer or truss superstructures.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of timber superstructures.

Module 24 - Inspection of Concrete Superstructure

  • Describe the various types of reinforced concrete superstructures.
  • Describe the various types of prestressed concrete superstructures.
  • Describe the defects and the types of deterioration common to concrete superstructures.
  • Describe the inspection procedure applicable to each type of concrete superstructure.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of concrete superstructures.

Module 25 -- Inspection of Steel Superstructures

  • Describe the various common types of steel superstructures.
  • Describe the defects and types of deterioration common to steel superstructures.
  • Describe the inspection procedure applicable to each type of steel superstructure.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of steel superstructures.

Module 26 - Inspection of Bridge Decks & Approaches

  • Describe the common types of timber, concrete and steel bridge decks
  • Describe the various railing systems, curbs, wearing surfaces, and drainage systems used on timber, concrete and steel decks.
  • Describe the problems that affect deck joints.
  • Describe the procedures for inspecting signage and lighting, roadway approaches and roadway flares.
  • Inspect and rate the condition of bridge decks and approaches.
