Course Details

This course is designed for students who would like to acquire more industrial oriented skills. The course focuses on the wiring, programming, implementation and uses of typical industrial AC drives. Real time data acquisition and monitoring are some of the topics covered. AC drive theory along with solid state devices and motor control are included.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze diode characteristics.
  • Examine diode rectifier circuit.
  • Analyze silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) characteristics.
  • Examine SCR circuits.
  • Set up and operate an AC induction motor Soft Starter.
  • Examine and build a 4 quadrant converter for a DC Shunt motor.
  • Construct a DC Shunt motor controller.
  • Analyze high speed switching devices.
  • Construct inverter circuits.
  • Differentiate between chopper modulation techniques.
  • Construct a rectifier/converter circuit to control speed of an AC induction motor.
  • Modify control circuits to attain better AC induction motor speed and torque control.
  • Describe concepts of Flux Vector control.
  • Set up and operate a PWM AC induction motor Variable Speed Drive.
