This course is an introduction to the renewable energy systems concepts necessary for installation and maintenance. The course will review and expand upon the fundamentals of electric circuits, analyzing electric circuits at an intermediate level. Other topics are power quality, and the interpretation of energy system installation drawings and prints. Work, power, and energy concepts will allow students to convert between units for mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems. The Canadian Electrical Code for renewable energy systems installations is introduced. To encourage the use of online resources and teamwork a remote system monitoring project is undertaken. A significant part of the course is dedicated to practical activities that reinforce the theory. Introduction to the transfer and conversion of various forms of energy.
This course was retired after the Spring/Summer 2018 term and is no longer offered through BCIT Part-time Studies.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Analyze steady state alternating and direct current circuits with multiple sources by doing Y-Delta conversions and by applying a mesh current analysis method.
Troubleshoot electric circuits with due regard to safe practices.
Convert between units for mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems.
Solve problems of work, power, and energy that involve RMS values and duty cycles.
Apply graphical methods to analyze non-sinusoidal waveforms.
Use a power quality meter to analyze 3-phase power system harmonics.
Perform simple calculations on heat transfer.
Apply the Canadian Electrical Code Section 64 definitions to renewable energy system prints and drawings.
Set up simple communication to do real-time monitoring of renewable energy system parameters.
