Course Details

PERF 8100 will concentrate on observational rotations in all areas of the hospital related to the cardiac patient. These observations will help orientate the students to all the staff and areas with which a Cardiovascular Perfusionist may be involved. This course is an introduction to the operating room environment; sterility, scrub techniques and infection control. It will also put emphasize on the foundations of professionalism, communication, ethics, legal aspects and the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP) Standards of Practice and Mission Statement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Exhibit the fundamental behavior that makes up professionalism in the hospital workplace.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, families, and staff in the hospital environment.
  • Describe and demonstrate what constitutes a safe hospital workplace environment, documenting and reporting unsafe situations (equipment, handling biohazard material, etc.)
  • Explain the principles of Infection control techniques in the hospital setting.
  • Apply universal precautions and demonstrate aseptic and sterile technique.
  • Observe and describe commonly used surgical instrumentation.
  • Assess ethical considerations and legal implications related to the field of cardiovascular perfusion.
  • Conduct thorough patient assessment and chart review, and communicate findings both in writing and orally to attending perfusionist.
  • Describe patients’ right to refuse blood products, and how the perfusionist may be required to adapt techniques to meet various personal beliefs.
  • Perform accurate perfusion case calculations in preparation for surgery.
  • Demonstrate effective and appropriate charting techniques during case observation.
  • Perform take down, cleaning and disinfection of perfusion equipment using hospital departmental standards.
  • Explain the concept of quality control and quality assurance in the hospital setting and demonstrate routine maintenance, calibration, Quality Control (QC) and inspection procedures for Perfusion equipment prior to clinical use.
  • Review and explain the elements that constitute the Role of the Perfusionist as put forth by the CSCP.
  • Explain and adhere to the Recommended Basic Standards of Practice of Clinical Perfusion as put forth by the CSCP (e.g., recognizes personal limitations, delegates tasks, etc).
  • Promote the discipline of perfusion through involvement in professional activities (e.g., institutional, regional, and national committees, organizations, recertification process, etc).
  • Pursue opportunities for ongoing education, self-development, and professional growth.
