Course Details

The Breastfeeding Experience course explores foundational concepts for health care providers who support mothers, newborns and their families through the breastfeeding continuum. This is a theory-only course that will enable students to acquire the knowledge required by health care providers to support mother/infant dyads in a successful breastfeeding experience.



This course was retired after the Fall 2017 term and is no longer offered through BCIT Part-time Studies.

Learning Outcomes

In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership and professionalism. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Critically examine key breastfeeding concepts and practice in relation to primary health care within the context of support and prevention.
  • Describe the composition of human milk and the key principles that support lactogenesis.
  • Discuss the anticipatory guidance required by mothers and their families to support the ongoing breastfeeding experience.
  • Develop professional perspectives of breastfeeding and a repertoire of strategies to support mothers experiencing breastfeeding challenges.
  • Develop an understanding of hospital and community breastfeeding resources
  • Explore global initiatives related to implementing change to promote, support and protect a breastfeeding culture.
