Course Details

Provides an overview of the key safety issues encountered in the mineral exploration environment. Topics include: development of safe working habits, emergency response plans, personal safety gear, work in remote camp settings, safe travel in the field, survival skills, wildlife awareness, safe operation around aircraft, watercraft and exploration drills, and hazards associated with underground mine workings.

  2. This course is designed to help aid new field workers in understanding the numerous safety concerns associated with field work and as a refresher for those who already have field experience.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Assess the dangers in a mineral exploration field setting.
  • Outline safe working practices required for mineral exploration, particularly in remote settings.
  • Describe the components of an Emergency Response Plan.
  • List and describe the personal safety equipment required for mineral exploration work.
  • Describe techniques for the prevention, identification, and treatment of hypothermia and hyperthermia.
  • Identify hazards related to fire, firearms, explosives, lightning and the weather.
  • Describe safe operating procedures around various types of transportation vehicles (helicopters, planes, ATV's, snowmobiles, boats).
  • Recall general precautions necessary for safe traversing.
  • Explain survival preparation methods, including the design of an emergency survival kit.
  • Identify and discuss the main threats posed to humans by wildlife in British Columbia.
  • Describe the principle hazards associated with mineral exploration drilling.
  • Outline the key hazards associated with active and historic mine sites, particularly with respect to mine gasses.
