Course Details
COMM 0029 is a level one course that provides opportunities for individuals working in business, technical, and health fields to improve their listening and speaking communications skills for successful participation in both BCIT courses and the workplace. The course concentrates on basic pronunciation and intonation as well as on-the-job speaking skills. Individuals will study and practice the essential aspects of speaking and listening in English and develop proficiency in conversation and group discussions. Extensive out-of-class resources such as audio laboratory and online assignments will assist students in broadening their knowledge of specific communications skills required for the workplace. Students can take this course as an option to meet the prerequisites for COMM 0030. NOTE: Seat availability is limited and registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis only. We do not guarantee or reserve seats for students with no exceptions. Please also be mindful that taking the COMM 0033 test and receiving a placement does NOT guarantee students a seat for a course in the next available term/schedule. Financial aid is also available for this course. Please refer to the following website: https://www.bcit.ca/finaid/abesap.shtml for more information. Your application must be submitted NO LATER THAN THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.
Prerequisite(s)
Students must have ONE of the following: (1) COMM 0033 (placement at the COMM 0029 level) within the past 12 months OR (2) CLB/LINC score of 5 or better in both speaking and listening within the last 12 months OR (3) IELTS (academic format only) of 5.5 or better in both speaking and listening within the last 2 years OR (4) Completion of ELSK 515 through the Pathway program OR (5) Completion of ISEP Level 5 with 50% or better in each course OR (6) TOEFL overall score of 70 or better within the last 2 years.
All scheduled PELD classes will be temporarily online via Learning Hub (learn.bcit.ca) until further notice. Your instructor will send you details via your BCIT email (my.bcit.ca) about your course approximately one week before the start date. Effective September 1, 2017, the tuition portion of this course is free for Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected person/Convention refugee status. Please note: ancillary fees such as Student Association fees, BCIT ID card fees, etc. will be charged and must be paid within two business days of registration. Please be sure to ask the Registrar's office of payment options and deadlines. You will be dropped from the course if ancillary fees are not paid within the deadline. **Headset and microphone required.** STUDENTS MUST GET APPROVAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT TO REGISTER FOR THIS COURSE.
