COMM 0029 - Speaking and Listening Skills for EAL Students 1

Communication Part-time Studies Course

School of Computing and Academic Studies

BCIT is planning for a substantial return to on-campus activity for the fall 2021 term as informed by BC Public Health Officer guidelines. Refer to each course listing for details.

Course Details

COMM 0029 is a level one course that provides opportunities for individuals working in business, technical, and health fields to improve their listening and speaking communications skills for successful participation in both BCIT courses and the workplace. The course concentrates on basic pronunciation and intonation as well as on-the-job speaking skills. Individuals will study and practice the essential aspects of speaking and listening in English and develop proficiency in conversation and group discussions. Extensive out-of-class resources such as audio laboratory and online assignments will assist students in broadening their knowledge of specific communications skills required for the workplace. Students can take this course as an option to meet the prerequisites for COMM 0030. NOTE: Seat availability is limited and registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis only. We do not guarantee or reserve seats for students with no exceptions. Please also be mindful that taking the COMM 0033 test and receiving a placement does NOT guarantee students a seat for a course in the next available term/schedule. Financial aid is also available for this course. Please refer to the following website: https://www.bcit.ca/finaid/abesap.shtml for more information. Your application must be submitted NO LATER THAN THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.

Prerequisite(s)

Students must have completed ONE of the following: (1) COMM 0033 (placement at the COMM 0029 level) within the past 12 months OR (2) CLB/LINC or CELPIP score of 5 and/or 6 in both speaking and listening within the last 12 months OR (3) IELTS (academic format only) of 5.5 in both speaking and listening within the last 24 months OR (4) Completion of ELSK 515 through the Pathway program OR (5) Completion of ISEP Level 4 with 60% or better in each course (if taken before January 2021) OR (6) TAE 3 with 60% (if taken after January 2021) OR (7) TOEFL overall score of 46 or better within the last 24 months
