Course Overview
The selection, efficient utilization and cost- effectiveness of major construction operations (such as earthmoving, lifting, transporting, etc) have a significant impact on the overall cost and duration of construction activities. This course will review and discuss the operational parameters of many of these activities including earth moving operations, lifting, materials handling, foundation construction, asphalt and concrete production facilities. This will also include the determination of and management of equipment operating costs.
Prerequisite(s)
- Acceptance into the degree completion program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Classify a broad range of heavy construction equipment based on their functional and operational characteristics.
- Interpret the requirements of the project and anticipate the working conditions in order to select the most appropriate equipment for a range of construction activities.
- Differentiate and sequence different earthmoving operations, explain the soil classification system and discuss the impact of soil type, density and moisture content on the productivity of different earthmoving equipment.
- Explain the function and application of dozers, loaders, scrapers, excavators, trucks, graders and soil compaction equipment to different earthmoving operations and be able to recommend the most appropriate piece/combination of equipment for specific operations under anticipated working conditions.
- Identify and categorize construction lifting equipment. With the knowledge of the operational parameters associated with cranes from each of the categories, recommend the most appropriate piece of equipment for the identified lifting operations(s).
- Identify and discuss the function of construction equipment associated with foundation construction activities. From an analysis of the proposed works, participants will be able to select appropriate equipment to perform the required tasks associated with pile driving, pumping and de-watering, together with the use and application of portable air compression equipment.
- Identify and discuss the equipment needs for the production of aggregates for use in asphalt and concrete production facilities. This will include recommendations for the selection of different types of crushing, screening and sorting equipment depending on the desired aggregates.
- Explain alternate equipment choices for the production and placement of asphaltic and cementitious concretes and make appropriate recommendations for specific situations to reflect cost-effective decisions.
