This course introduces the basic principles of soil mechanics and testing procedures through lectures, problem-solving sessions, and laboratory demonstrations. Topics include mass/volume relationships, soil classification, compaction, and permeability.

  1. There will be NO class on Monday, October 8 Thanksgiving Day Statutory Holiday and Monday, November 12 day in lieu of Remembrance Day Statutory Holiday. This course will run for a total of 10 classes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Calculate volume-weight relationships for soils.
  • Classify soils using the Unified Soil Classification System.
  • Describe compaction and in-place soil density tests.
  • Solve applied problems dealing with soil permeability.
