Course Overview
This course presents the basic knowledge required to select materials for concrete production, design a concrete mix, and conduct quality control tests on concrete. The course is delivered through lectures and laboratory sessions. Topics include cements, water/cement ratio, admixtures, concrete properties, manufacturing, placing, finishing, curing, and inspection techniques as per CSA A23.1 and A23.2.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between the types of Portland cement, and explain the Portland cement hydration process.
- Identify and explain the use of supplementary cementing materials and chemical admixtures.
- Determine constituent material proportions for standard Portland cement concrete mixtures.
- Explain the basic procedures involved in batching, mixing, transporting and handling Portland cement concrete.
- Explain the basic procedures involved in placing and finishing Portland cement concrete.
- Identify appropriate curing procedures, particularly during hot- or cold-weather conditions, for Portland cement concrete.
- Sample and conduct laboratory tests on Portland cement concrete.
- Develop an understanding of the effect of water/cement ratio and curing methods on concrete strength.
