Learning Outcomes

Upon successful cmpletion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamental differences between asphalt cement concrete and Portland cement concretes and where each might be used.
  • Describe the physical properties of key pavement materials, tests used to measure these properties, and construction operations required to produce these materials.
  • Explain the basics of hot mix and Portland cement concrete mix design and their various components.
  • Identify and describe typical tests used to measure quality and contract compliance; and evaluate and recommend the best use of Soils, Aggregate, HMA, PCC.
  • Acquire and prepare samples of construction materials for testing.
  • General Understanding of the Unified Soils Classification System, sieve analysis, relative density, Atterberg limits and compaction tests following the applicable testing procedures as specified by CSA and ASTM.
