CESA 1501 - Passive House Tradesperson – Envelope Specialization

Course Details

This 48-hour course will provide a comprehensive study of residential Passive House construction to ensure that that builders, site supervisors, general contractors, tradespeople, and designers or consultants have the applied knowledge to build to the Passive House standard. Students will learn from industry experts and develop an applied understanding of the Passive House Standard, building science, ultra-airtight design and construction, thermal-bridge free and highly insulated assembly details, PH window and door installation practices, and an introduction to ventilation and mechanical systems for Passive House homes. Students will develop a solid understanding of Passive House planning principles, standard metrics, certification requirements, processes, and quality control best practices. Course includes an exam preparation session to ensure students are prepared to earn their certification as an International Passive House Tradesperson by completing the Certified Passive House Tradesperson Exam (standard international exam set by the Passive House Institute and offered in Canada by Passive House Canada). This course is offered fully online with industry expert instructors providing online lectures and live construction demonstrations in the BCIT High Performance Building Lab. Self-directed online learning modules contain reference materials, applied exercises, take-away job-aids, knowledge checks, and exam preparation.

This is a ten weeks course with 13 live lectures on Tuesdays (10 lectures) and Thursdays (3 lectures): • Tuesdays: January 19 to February 23 from 1pm-5pm (4 hrs); • Tuesdays: March 2 to March 23 from 1pm-4pm (3 hrs); • Thursdays: January 21, March 4, and March 11 from 1pm-5pm (4 hrs). Instructional sessions are delivered through a live interactive web-lecture through online course portal (BCIT Learning Hub) by industry subject matter expert instructors. Students have until March 25, 2021 to complete all graded items online.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the Passive House standard including performance metrics and certification process.
  • Define 5 Passive House principles: highly insulating envelope, thermal bridge free construction, airtightness, windows and solar gains, ventilation with heat recovery.
  • Explain fundamentals of building science (heat, air, and moisture transmission) in the context of various Passive House assemblies.
  • Describe Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and other planning principles.
  • Compare material properties (membranes, tapes, components, etc.) with respect to durability and performance in their application as an air barrier system.
  • Observe installation of various air barrier solutions to achieve the airtightness (ACH) metrics of the Passive House standard.
  • Compare material properties (membranes, insulation, tapes, fasteners, etc.) in the application of various near PH Building assemblies.
  • Observe construction detailing of various enclosure solutions to achieve the thermal performance (TEDI) metrics of the Passive House standard.
  • Observe correct installation and integration of Passive House windows into the wall assembly.
  • Compare the performance and constructability of several different approaches to meet the thermal performance (TEDI) and airtightness (ACH) metrics.
  • Explain the best practices of planning and coordination from design through to construction and testing to meet the requirements of the PH Standard.
  • Explain the best practices for managing airtightness (from design to construction and testing).
  • Explain the best practices for ensuring ventilation system performance (from design to construction and commissioning).
