Course Details

This introductory course provides an overview of the basic knowledge and skills required for those working in the Long Term Care industry or those who aspire to work within Long Term Care. This overview course will focus on how Long Term Care is structured , the legislative framework for LTC , the geriatric population, related organizations and stakeholders as well as quality improvement, risk management, workplace wellness and ethics and values with a particular focus on Resident Centered care. Students will gain the skills and knowledge through readings, case studies, discussions with health care professionals and family members who have been involved with the long term care system. As the first course in the Long Term Care Facilities Management Statement of Completion this course highlights areas that will be developed more fully in subsequent courses.​

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Define long term care and differentiate the different levels of care available to seniors.
  • Understand the system of Long Term Care including:
    • Philosophy
    • Funding
    • Legislated standards (Community Care & Assisted Living Act, and Residential Care Regulations)
    • Admission Criteria
    • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Cite the unique attributes/challenges of the geriatric population.
  • Articulate the family/client perspective of accessing and transitioning to long term care.
  • Become familiar with the legislation and governance pertaining to Long Term Care.
  • Identify the major stakeholders and the roles they play in Long Term Care.
  • Apply the quality improvement model in the Long Term Care setting:
    • Understand the multiple ways to identify areas for improvement
    • Use the tools and resources involved in quality improvement
    • Create SMART goals related to a long term care issue
  • Understand how culture relates to a healthy work environment in Long Term Care.
  • Understand the client-specific risks involved in Long Term Care and how we can learn from harmful incidents.
  • Understand the importance of disclosure in the risk management process.
  • Articulate the role of WorkSafe BC at it applies to Long Term Care.
  • Understand the importance of work place wellness:
    • Identify the high risk work place activities in Long Term Care
    • Understand the process of incident investigation
    • Understand how to take appropriate action to mitigate risk
  • Articulate the meaning of client centred care and understand that client centred care is a guiding principle in Long Term Care.
