Course Overview
This course takes a deeper dive into airtightness and assembly details to further develop understanding and techniques that will be needed for success with the upper steps of the BC Energy Step Code. Students will advance their construction knowledge and skills with respect to building envelope design, construction and performance verification of residential buildings (Part 9 Buildings). Student hands-on work will focus on specific strategies to ensure airtightness of final assembly with an emphasis on detailed solutions for managing critical control barriers in split insulated assemblies . The course will develop more understanding of the assembly details and construction methods for higher performance above-grade walls, below-grade walls and roofs. Student hands-on work will focus on approaches to meet the thermal performance (TEDI) and airtightness (ACH) metrics of the BC Energy Step Code using various materials and techniques for detailing interfaces, windows, and penetrations. Students are expected to have some prior knowledge of the BC Energy Step Code and building science.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an introductory understanding of the fundamentals of air flow fundamentals as they relate to building enclosure assemblies, including:
- Identify air barrier system elements on a building cut-section.
- Compare common air barrier strategies in terms of performance and constructability.
- Recall the four major principles of an effective air barrier.
- Practice installation of an air barrier system, including:
- Install an air barrier system installation under supervision of the instructor.
- Discuss typical challenges encountered during installation of an air barrier system.
- Adapt to penetrations made through a completed air barrier assembly.
- Demonstrate an introductory understanding of building enclosure assemblies, including:
- Identify the 5 critical layers of a building enclosure assembly at details and interfaces.
- Practice detail installation of interfaces and assemblies using an interior and an exterior insulated approach, including:
- Discuss typical installation challenges and sequencing issues.
- Be aware of the importance of planning and coordination from design through to construction and testing to meet the Part 9 requirements of the BC Energy Step Code, including:
- Identify the airtightness requirements for Part 9 buildings per the BC Energy Step Code.
- Identify the thermal performance considerations for Part 9 buildings per the BC Energy Step Code.
