Course Overview
At a time when design professionals are striving to reduce the environmental impact of their buildings, and both public and private institutions are looking for ways to minimize their carbon footprint, this course will provide: an introduction to the unique attributes of wood as a building material: give an overview of the emerging technologies of mid-rise frame, mass timber and composite construction in British Columbia; explain how wood fits within the broader context of environmental, economic and social sustainability; and discuss the physical and psychological benefits to be gained from the greater use of wood in buildings.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the unique properties of wood as a building material, and their impact on methods of construction.
- Describe traditional methods of building in wood, both in North America and internationally.
- Explain the various circumstances that contributed to a decline in the use of wood in the early 20th century.
- Explain the key attributes of wood that make it an important material in the context of sustainable building practice.
- Explain the importance of third party certification of sustainable forest management.
- Enumerate the various changes in the practice environment for architects and engineers that have led to new opportunities for wood use.
- Explain the various approaches now being taken to build larger and taller structures in wood.
- Explain the basic principles of Constructive Environmentalism as it relates to building with wood.
- Explain the relationship between increased wood use and the promotion of economic and social sustainability.
- Explain the human health benefits of using wood in buildings.
