Course Overview
Introduces the basic concepts of transfusion science. Utilizes terminology needed to understand and communicate about transfusion practice. Illustrates and provides opportunity to practice the basic techniques used in the transfusion service. Learning is assessed through a combination of exams, quizzes, assignments, and laboratory work.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Articulate basic concepts of genetics and immunology as related to transfusion science practice.
- Use terminology appropriately to communicate concepts of transfusion practice.
- Describe clinical and serological characteristics of the ABO, Rh and other major blood group systems.
- Perform pretransfusion testing, including ABO typing, Rh typing, DAT, and antibody screen.
- Describe the blood donor selection process and associated testing.
