Course Overview
The television industry today requires individuals who possess a good working knowledge of basic business concepts. This course is designed to provide the student with an insight into setting up and running a company or operating as an independent contractor in the television production field. Small business topics covered include: preparing a business plan, developing a marketing plan, identifying target markets, cash flow and finance, and forms of employment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Explain the various forms to set up a business.
- Discuss advantages and disadvantages of incorporation.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of employment.
- Explain components of various self-employment options available in the contemporary economy.
- Research and determine necessary resources for business operation.
- Explain the role of bookkeeping, accounting and taxation in a media company or sole proprietorship.
- Explain basic concepts in finance and banking.
- Develop a simple cash flow statement.
- Organize tasks and manage time effectively.
- Explain basic marketing concepts and create a simple marketing plan.
- Explain the importance of human resources and labour law in a media organization.
- Recognize elements of contracts and business law.
- Determine when to consult with accountants, lawyers, marketers and other business management professionals.
- Prepare an original business plan.
