Course Overview
This course introduces students to the basics of technical writing and develops the skills needed to write effective technical documents. The competencies developed in this course will be used throughout the INC program. Many courses from the second term forward will include some form of technical writing which will be included in the courses’ evaluations. Topics include: writing common technical documents such as progress, trip, field, laboratory, and design reports; writing effective letters and emails; writing technical descriptions and instructions; creating appropriate tables, charts, graphs and illustrations; and using proper citation.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyse the audience and define the purpose for a given communication task. (4)
- Apply best practices for page design for readability in technical documents. (3)
- Write technical documents that: focus on the reader; present the material logically; use concise, clear wording; use direct pattern to get to the point; provide accurate information; satisfy document specifications; and explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience. (4)
- Write a variety of documents used in the engineering field such as: emails (with an emphasis on proper etiquette when communicating with other professionals), a short report (for example: progress field, laboratory, and design reports); technical descriptions and instructions) (4)
- Create appropriate tables, charts, graphs and illustrations (construct and properly integrate).(4)
- Deliver an informative presentation on an INC topic. (4)
