Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Module 1 - Introduction/Vectors
- Define the units of measurement used in Statics, and explain the terminology used to describe loading systems and their supports.
- Set up and solve problems involving the use of trigonometrical functions.
- Solve problems involving the manipulation of vector quantities.
Module 2 - Moments and Couples
- Calculate the turning effect (moment) about an axis caused by a single force or combination of forces.
- Identify and measure couples.
Module 3 - Resultants
- Determine the resultant of concurrent and parallel forces, or systems where the forces are neither concurrent nor parallel.
- Substitute a single resultant force for a system of distributed loading.
- Replace a force by another force and a couple.
Module 4 - Equilibrium
- Draw free body diagrams of systems in equilibrium.
- Use the equations of equilibrium to determine reacting forces in concurrent and parallel force systems.
- Calculate the resisting moment in fixed-ended cantilevered systems.
Module 5 - Trusses
- Recognize and define two force members in force systems.
- Analyze trusses by evaluation of the joints.
- Analyze trusses by isolating sections.
Module 6 - Frames and Machines
- Use the method of members to analyze frames.
- Solve problems related to frames and machines.
Module 7 - Three-dimensional Systems
- Reduce forces to components along three axes.
- Apply the equations of equilibrium to three-dimensional systems and use these to solve for forces.
Effective as of Fall 2003
