Course details
Safety in Bear Country introduces the participant to a number of skills and techniques that can be utilized to effectively stay safe when working or recreating in bear country. Topics include bear biology and ecology, bear identification (both black and grizzly bears), bear behaviour, information about bear avoidance, responding to bear encounters and bear attacks as well as information on bear deterrent tools. The basic theory course (3.5 hours) can be expanded to include a practical component that introduces how to safely use bear deterrents (additional 3 hours).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe basic concepts related to bear biology and ecology.
- Identify the basic physical characteristics that distinguish the difference between black and grizzly bears.
- Describe proper avoidance strategies to prevent human/bear conflicts.
- Describe methods for dealing with bear encounters and bear attacks.
- Describe the various non-lethal bear deterrents and how to use these tools.
