Course Overview
Examines the components of the research process. Under the guidance of faculty advisors, students work independently to select a research topic in public health and develop a detailed research proposal for the project to be conducted in ENVH 8410 (Applied Research Project). In addition to developing core competencies in the research process, students will enhance their communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, reading, evidence-based decision making and statistical skills. Requires an off-campus practicum component.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate an article from a scientific journal.
- Select an appropriate research topic for completion in the subsequent course.
- Define the research problem.
- Conduct a literature review.
- Formulate meaningful research questions.
- Select an appropriate research method and statistical analysis for the problem.
- Define the scope and depth of the project.
- Estimate the time, cost, and effort required to complete the project.
- Justify the benefits of completing the project.
- Prepare and deliver an oral presentation of the research proposal to faculty and students.
- Relate the research process to evidence-based decision making and knowledge translation.
