Course Overview
This course is the first of three, focusing on the theory required to perform basic imaging procedures of the upper and lower extremities, spine, chest and abdominal radiography. The course also familiarizes students with related aspects of patient care, medicolegal documentation and imaging criteria in relation to MRAD 1216 and MRAD 1219 as well as clinical experiences. Emphasis is placed on routine positioning as well as an introduction to problem solving for atypical patients and their specific physical, emotional, and psychological needs. In addition, students will be introduced to basic procedures of gastrointestinal system examinations, including positioning, patient care and appropriate use of oral contrast media.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of routine radiography procedures of the appendicular skeleton, vertebral spine, chest, abdomen and digestive system.
- Recognize effective and required aspects of communication with patients and healthcare team members.
- Perform patient identification and interview processes to ascertain patient's medical history and confirm identity.
- Describe routine radiography practices related to patient interactions prior, during, and post examinations; recognize non-routine circumstances.
- Describe the influence of age on routine examinations.
- Describe the effect of principles of beam geometry on body anatomy and the rationale for it's use.
- Describe adaptions for examinations based on patient and equipment limitations.
- Describe aspects of radiographic technical factors in relation to the resultant image.
- Describe methods of providing radiation safe environment for the patient, public and hospital staff.
- Describe the appropriate use of procedure related pharmaceuticals for gastrointestinal procedures.
