Course details

​This course explores Quality Control as a process and management approach to lumber manufacturing processes. The following aspects are considered as part of the course: implementation and management of a Quality Control program in the context of a sawmill plant, tools and strategies employed to support Quality Control initiatives, data collection and assessment methods applied to specific production processes. The difference between Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs is also emphasized. Students engage in their learning through online activities across the term, and in-class activities during an onsite week. Students' knowledge is assessed through online discussions, quizzes, and the final exam as well as through practical projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe Quality control as a process and management tool.
  • Identify strategies to ensure that a Quality control program is timely and cost effective.
  • Describe the use of size control tools in the wood processing industry.
  • Apply quality assessment methods to specific production processes and environments.
  • Explain the difference between Quality control and Quality assurance programs.
  • Describe the application of statistical analysis in quality control
  • Describe problem solving approaches in quality control
