Course Overview
This is an introductory course in project management and covers the fundamental principles for success. The skills, tools and techniques required to balance the competing demands of project scope, time, cost and quality will be reviewed. Major topics include terminology, statement of work, work breakdown structure, PERT, CPM and Gant charts. The course is divided into two main sections, and in the second half of the course Microsoft Project software will be used to define and plan project information.

- Define a project and its attributes.
- Describe the 4 constraints within which a project must be managed.
- Describe the life cycle of a project.
- Explain the common characteristics of project life cycles.
- Explain the project management process for a successful project.
- Define a baseline plan.
- Explain the basic steps for controlling a project.
- List the elements of project planning.
- Project Management Tools:
- Explain how to develop an accurate list of project activities and time estimates.
- Describe a work break down structure.
- Create and use a Gantt chart.
- Draw precedence diagrams for project activities.
- Draw a network diagram.
- Calculate the early/late start and finish times for activities on a network diagram.
- Identify the critical path on a network diagram.
- Calculate the slack time for activities.
- Calculate the project duration.
- Explain how to construct a responsibility matrix.
- Describe the content of a typical project weekly report.
- Explain the purpose of a project team effectiveness checklist.
- Statement of Work:
- Identify project stakeholders and list there responsibility.
- Define a project in terms of a purpose statement.
- Describe a project in terms of objectives.
- Describe a project in terms of scope.
- Explain the importance of identifying project assumptions and constraints.
- Explain the significance of a formal sign-off schedule for project milestones.
- Know how to setup a reporting plan.
Project Management Report Writing:
- Explain the 5 main components of a project report.
- Prepare a project report for a student project including the following elements:
- Purpose statement
- Objectives
- Scope
- Stakeholders and Responsibilities
- Assumptions and/or Constraints
- Sign-off and Review
- Reporting and Communication Plan
- Project Deliverables
- Methodology
- Schedule of Activities
- MS Project Software:
- Setup a project with a specific start date.
- Enter tasks and create a work break down structure.
- Determine the duration of work for a series of tasks.
- Sequence a series of tasks.
- Modify predecessor and successor relationships.
- Establish constraints.
- Assign resources to tasks.
- Create and edit base calendars for a project.
- Assign a calendar to a project.
- Change the appearance of the Gantt chart for printing.
- Adjust, hide and insert columns in the Gantt table.
- Adjust orientation and scaling for a print-out.
- Control the printing of Gantt table columns.
- Insert text and data fields in the Gantt chart printout legend.
- Change bar patterns for critical activities.
- Track changes in start and finish dates for activities.
- Use the tracking tool bar to update a project.
- Convert project text information into HTML.
- Create a graphical image of a Gantt chart.
- Create hyperlinks to link to text files from within MS project.
