Course Overview
Students will learn the importance of professional conduct in the healthcare setting. Students will explore the general organizational structures of clinical settings and the importance of a safe working environment. They will become familiar with legislation and standards of practice as they pertain to the Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) and the healthcare system as a whole. Students will relate their roles in the healthcare team to those of other professionals, the patient, and the community. Students are also introduced to the six competencies of interprofessional collaboration, learning foundational interprofessional competencies.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the professional roles, responsibilities, and conduct of a Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT). The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
- Canadian Association of Medication Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) Code of Ethics, Professional Conduct, and Scope of Practice documents
- Federal and provincial legislation and regulations affecting the practice of Medical Radiation Technology (MRT), including standards of practice and sexual abuse prevention guidelines
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with legislation
- Respecting the rights, dignity, privacy, and autonomy of the patient
- Methods and criteria for validation of informed consent
- Ensure ongoing informed consent to procedures
- Utilizing and adapting written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- Engage in activities to support and/or promote the profession
- Continuous professional learning by maintaining awareness of current and emerging issues and relevant technological developments
- Seek out learning opportunities and facilitate education of students, peers, and the public
- Describe the role of members of the healthcare team- including the patient, family, and community- and their contributions to safe healthcare. The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
- Demonstrate understanding of the roles of the healthcare team members (role clarity) present in clinical setting
- Apply knowledge of other imaging and therapeutic modalities
- Employ effective team processes to coordinate patient care
- Contents of requisitions and patient charts including thorough complete documentation
- Pre-procedure and post-procedure documentation and transfer of care
- Share MRT expertise with other healthcare professionals
- Know of available patient care and support services
- Advocate for patient, profession, and healthcare system through quality improvement processes
- Recommending evidence-based changes to improve quality of care
- Integrating changes into practice through appropriate consultation and approval
