Course Overview
Public Health Inspectors/Environmental Health Officers require excellent communication skills to interact with colleagues, other health professionals, officials, and members of the public. Therefore, this course develops essential written and oral communication skills for selecting, organizing, and presenting information to meet diverse audience needs. Practical writing skills include planning, drafting, and editing professional messages such as reports, letters, memos, and emails. Literature search techniques and critical analysis will be emphasized to strengthen evidence-based communication skills. Building on these fundamentals, students will apply critical lenses such as health equity in their communication practices. The course will prepare students to deliver oral presentations and use effective interpersonal communication techniques for common professional situations. Finally, students will prepare a career package and practice networking/interviewing skills.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define purposes, audiences, and planning processes for specific written and oral communication tasks within the profession, in interprofessional contexts, and with the public.
- Apply critical lenses such as health equity to communication tasks in environmental public health
- Critically evaluate information to determine if it is accurate, relevant, and complete.
- Select, organize, and present information to meet audience needs.
- Adjust style and tone according to audience needs.
- Plan, write, and edit messages such as reports, letters, memos and emails.
- Deliver an oral presentation to share knowledge, educate or persuade.
- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication techniques for a variety of objectives, including collaborating, educating, persuading and addressing conflict.
- Prepare for a job search in environmental health.
