Course Overview
This course builds upon the basics of business communication techniques taught in COMM 1112 Communications for Television and Video Production. It emphasizes the writing and research skills needed by professionals in television and video production. Students will develop writing skills by writing industry-specific production proposals and will develop research skills as they work their way through units on effective reading, time management, critical thinking, and advanced research techniques. Topics covered include proposals, persuasive messages, pitching, and industry-specific research on production funding. Also, students will receive introductory training on basic employment skills.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use effective communication skills when interacting with clients, peers, and supervisors.
- Write and present a persuasive production proposal.
- Create one-page production promotional sheet.
- Use production pitching techniques to persuade a producer or client to approve a production project.
- Perform research and report on broadcasters, film/TV project funding sources and applications and other markets for production proposals.
- Research story ideas and prepare rudimentary questions for one-on-one on camera interviews.
- Examine and employ the use of logic, emotion, and ethos in persuasive appeals.
- Analyse persuasive strategies in documents, advertising, scripts, and business plans.
- Perform rudimentary research on industry employers.
- Conduct oneself effectively in an informational interview to begin establishing a network.
- Write effective résumés and cover letters.
- Conduct oneself properly in a job interview.
- Critically evaluate information to determine if it is accurate, relevant, and complete, and to use critical thinking to develop strong arguments.
