Course Overview
This course prepares Registered Nurses to safely exercise prescribing authority in alignment with BCCNM standards. Building on BCIT's existing Certified Practice courses in Contraceptive Management and STI, this curriculum provides the BCCNM-approved prescribing education. Learners will develop competencies in pharmacotherapeutics, risk assessment, patient education, and ethical prescribing within the RN(C) role. Upon successful completion, RNs will be eligible to apply to BCCNM for prescribing authority, enhancing patient access to timely and high-quality care.
Prerequisite(s)
- 75% in NSPN 7720 or 75% in NSPN 7735
- This course is for graduates of BCIT CM or STI, BCCNM-certified practice courses – to register to complete the approved prescribing education to be eligible to apply for BCCNM prescribing authority if they me et the following criteria: Successfully completed a BCIT CM or STI Certified Practice Course prior to April 2026. Maintain current BCCNM registration in Reproductive Health Certified Practice - CM (NSPN 7720) or STI (NSPN 7735)

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the legal and regulatory framework governing the prescribing authority of Certified Practice Registered Nurses, including relevant provincial/federal legislation, BCCNM standards, and organizational policies.
- Apply the components of a comprehensive client assessment (health history, clinical evaluation, and diagnosis) in alignment with certified practice standards and personal competence.
- Apply evidence-informed decision-making to select and prescribe appropriate medications based on the client's diagnosis, therapeutic goals, best possible medication history, and current clinical guidelines.
- Demonstrate safe prescribing practices, including calculating accurate dosages, selecting appropriate routes, recognizing contraindications and interactions, and planning monitoring and follow-up.
- Accurately complete and transmit prescriptions in compliance with documentation standards, organizational policies, and privacy/confidentiality requirements.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with clients and interprofessional healthcare teams to ensure the prescribing plan aligns with the overall care plan and respects the client's values and needs.
- Recognize and prevent professional and ethical breaches by adhering to guidelines related to prescribing for self or non-clients, handling blank prescriptions, and participating in mandatory reporting programs.
