Course details

This course is a condensed version of Surveying Computations 1 and 2 of the full-time day program of the Geomatics Diploma Program. It prepares students to enter directly into the Diploma program at Level 3 in the Fall upon successful completion. A review of geometry and trigonometry as it applies to plane surveying problems will be covered. The sine law, cosine law and Pythagoras’ Theorem will be employed in survey applications. Azimuths and bearings will be defined and reductions from field observations will be introduced. The polar and rectangular coordinate systems will be defined and the conversion from one system to the other will be covered. Traverse calculations will be covered including the reduction of field data. The Compass Rule will be used for the adjustment of different types of closed traverses. Coordinate cross multiplication will be covered for determining the area of a polygon. Missing (omitted) part problems will be introduced to reinforce trigonometry used with triangles. The course will introduce control survey calculations using intersection and resection methods. The geometry of simple circular curves and the computation of curve layout data together with the theory and practical application of calculations for symmetrical parabolic vertical curves will be presented. Area calculations using a variety of methods will be discussed to enable the subdivision of land parcels to meet specific design requirements. Road cross-sectional areas and volume calculations for typical earthwork applications will be presented.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful compleltion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Solve right triangles and scalene triangles by various methods.
  • Use horizontal field angles to compute full-circle bearings.
  • Compute rectangular coordinates from polar coordinates and vice versa.
  • Carry out computations of open traverses and apply bearing swing in specific cases.
  • Carry out computations of closed traverses and adjust traverses by the Compass Rule.
  • Locate angular and linear blunders in closed traverses by computation.
  • Solve for elevation differences by trigonometric levelling observations.
  • Use coordinates to compute the area of a closed polygon.
  • Carry out computations of missing parts in a closed traverse or polygon.
  • Perform computations of coordinates of control stations using intersection and resection methods.
  • Compute areas of land parcels using various methods.
  • Identify the various geometric elements of simple circular curves.
  • Compute data to layout circular curves by different field methods.
  • Identify the various design elements of symmetrical parabolic vertical curves.
  • Apply mathematical theory to compute elevations and curve lengths for typical symmetrical vertical curve applications.
  • Calculate road cross-section areas and determine earthwork volumes for road and construction applications.
  • Subdivide land parcels to meet specific design requirements using calculation methods.
