Course Overview
This Geomatics Engineering Technology Pre-Entry course is split into two parts comprising a Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) part and a Geospatial Software Applications part. For the CAD part of the course, students will gain knowledge in the creation of maps and develop basic map and plan drafting skills using current AutoCAD software. For the Geospatial Software Applications part of the course, students will use different software applications to solve survey geometry problems using COGO software, Microsoft Excel and Matlab. This course will also provide an introduction to Geographical Information System (GIS) concepts and terminology including spatial data models, databases, query, analysis, data input and editing.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Prepare a set of industry-standard field notes and field sketches.
- Create survey plans considering appropriate map design, map elements and symbology.
- Use a scale to measure distances and a navigational protractor to measure directions and angles on a variety of plans and maps.
- Describe the main concepts of the Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) environment.
- Use the basic drawing, editing and inquiry commands in the AutoCAD environment.
- Explain fundamental CAD concepts including layers, text creation and text styles.
- Create text of varying heights according to industry-standard drawing scales.
- Explain the relationship of scale, plan requirements and paper size.
- Create a scaled and balanced manual plot on industry-standard size paper.
- Plot CAD drawings conforming to industry standards and scales.
- Manage CAD drawing files in a logical file-management structure.
- Create and use industry-standard symbols within the CAD environment to identify map features.
- Create blocks with attributes.
- Upload and download electronic field survey data.
- Build extensive 3D surface models and create topographic survey plans.
- Create drawing templates that align with land title drafting standards and other industry standards (including the creation of proper symbols, lines, texts, annotations, and so on).
